Richard Kenton and Nick Price, two of our most experienced members, are re-walking and then writing up walks (10 to 15 miles each) which they have done for Loddon Valley.

This walk starts at Brimpton Church.

Take the lane back to the road, turn right and shortly where it turns sharp right at pub, take road on left. Turn left onto footpath just past Brimpton Lodge. At metal gate at path crossroads, turn left and proceed down to road opposite Manor Farm Brimpton, turning right along road. Where road turns sharply right, take public bridleway on left. Stay on track to pass Stone House on left. Keep ahead down to road, turn right and shortly take footpath signposted on left opposite Manor Farm Crookham. Continue ahead through buildings bearing left on track through metal gate. Ignore all tracks off, continuing downhill to cross  bridge over River Enborne, turning immediately right along track. Turn left at footpath sign to cross field. Where track bears right, continue ahead through narrow strip of woodland.

Emerge from woods and where track bears left to farm buildings, continue ahead on footpath. On reaching road turn right and just after Goose Hill House turn left onto gravel drive signposted as a bridleway. Where driveway turns right, keep ahead on grass to follow footpath. At staggered crossroads continue ahead and at end of wire fencing bear right, waymarked on telegraph pole. On reaching road bear right past white cottage on left and turn left on to stony track ignoring all paths off. Pass through metal gate and turn immediately right on to footpath. At fork in path bear left along hedgerow to pass rear of house on right. Continue along path to meet metal gate and wooden fence. Turn left to follow hedgerow on left and fence on right. Pass through metal gate and after 20 meters turn right onto indistinct footpath through woods. On emerging from woods turn right on to track and follow field edge round to the left. Continue ahead until meeting road. Turn right and after 30 metres cross road to take footpath into woods. After waymark on left leave woods and turn immediately right onto path. On meeting track from right at edge of woods turn left and immediately right at waymark across footbridge bearing left again. Turn left to follow left-hand field edge and at bottom left-hand corner of field bear left through trees and immediately right on to broad grassy track. Continue ahead onto dirt track until arriving at a T-junction. Turn left up gravel track past buildings to reach road.  

Cross road, continue ahead on track to reach edge of woods and turn right. Where track turns sharp right, bear left into woods. Ignore all paths off main track and leave the woods over a footbridge. Follow path uphill to reach open field and at edge of woods ahead turn left on well-defined footpath. Cross stream and proceed uphill to Haughurst Hill. Continue on road through village past phone box and shortly turn left on to footpath. On reaching road continue ahead and where road bends sharp right take footpath ahead through gorse bushes to reach T-junction. Turn left down to road and right along road, and shortly at staggered crossroads cross stile on left signposted Public Footpath. Follow field edge and at waymark signs turn right to enter woods. On leaving woods follow byway signposted ahead with houses on left. Continue ahead on path and turn right by metal gate and Public Footpath sign.

 After 20 metres turn left and keep ahead on path. At end of path cross gravel track and enter field through swing-gate. Head towards the church and leave field by further swing-gate turning left onto Public Footpath. Continue ahead following drive down hill. At the road turn left and right to cross Shalford Bridge. At road junction take left fork signposted Brimpton and Newbury. Where road bends sharp left pass through wooden gate on right and turn left along footpath. At path crossroads by gravel track, turn left at metal gate. Continue ahead to road and turn right up to T-junction. Turn right and cross road to shortly reach lane on left back to Brimpton Church.

Chalgrove, 637966, 10½ miles, Explorer 171, (Chalgrove, Stadhampton, Newington, Berrick Salome, Brightwell Baldwin, Chalgrove)

From the main entrance to the church yard in Chalgrove go around to the right and the rear right take the footpath going to the right. At the ‘T’ junction go left to cross a steam and turn immediately right. Ignore footpath to right at the next path turn right over footbridge and follow path through to road. There turn right then left at main road, in 200yds turn left into doctors surgery car park to the right hand side of which is a footpath, take this through allotments. Go over stile into a very long field at the end of which over stile and footbridge into another field. Keep to the right hand fence, about half way along cross stile and turn left. Cross field to stile in mid fence , cross small field to metal gate, to the left of Ascott Farm buildings. Through second metal gate to road, turn right. At ‘T’ junction ahead turn left, pass barn and turn immediately right. Where path forks beyond second side of barn take right fork to keep fence on your left. Over stile, through thick hedge, straight ahead at path cross roads to further stile in corner of field. Follow enclosed path through to kissing gate, go straight ahead across Stadhampton green to main road (A329).

Follow road through Stadhampton , beyond garage bear left on A329 road. In 50yds bear left into Bear Lane, at ‘T’ junction turn left to pass Newell’s Farm. Where path forks immediately before Newell’s Pond go right. At the end of the pond bear left to go over waymarked stile.  At field boundary turn right, cross fields to exit onto farm track, turn right. Keeping Hill Farm on right diagonally cross field towards houses, cross stile and immediately left. With houses on right over stile into Great Holcombe farm yard. Turn left, bear right at fork in farm yard, go behind Leyland hedge (hedge now on your left). Over stile then diagonally across field to left of pond to cross footbridge. In field diagonally right to pass between houses to road. In 20yds turn left into enclosed footpath, over stile and up field to stile on horizon there right. Over further stile and into large field, slow climb up to plateau, continue forward with Ewe Farm over to left, to exit field onto road.

At road turn left, in 400yds turn left up farm track. Follow track around to pass wood on left in 250ydsafter wood turn right to cross field. Keep far corner of small wood to your right and fence / hedge on left with pond on right. Cross footbridge then diagonally left to cross stile to road. At road turn right, follow road around to enter Berrick Salome. Just before the pub turn left on road towards church. Follow road around and where road goes sharply right continue ahead on bridleway. In ¾ mile cross minor road, in a further ½ mile ahead at track cross roads and a further ½ mile at ‘T’ junction turn right. At next junction turn left to go through Brightwell Baldwin. Pass church on left and take footpath on left to cross in front of Brightwell Park Farm. Ignore paths to left and right and follow path across field to pass in front of Cadwell Farm which is on your left. Follow path into wood and bear left, at exit onto road turn right. In 300yds at end of wood on right look for footpath on right, over stile and cross field to road. Turn right and follow road to main road here left then first left into Church Lane. Follow lane back to Chalgrove church.

Checkendon, 664830, 11 miles, Explorer 171, (Checkendon, Well Place, Hailey, (Crowmarsh), Nuffield, Howberrywood, Stoke Row, Checkendon)

Park in front of church, follow footpath sign to left of church along drive. At gates turn right. Following the main path ignore footpaths to right and left. Follow path around to right, cross stile, over the road to stile opposite and across field to the nearest corner of the wood.  Over stile into wood (Braziers Common) and follow the arrows. Bear left at footpath junction, at footpath crossroads go ahead downhill. At road turn left then right to follow enclosed footpath passed farm. Over stile into wood ( Berins Hill), following arrows, fork right at footpath junction. At wood edge over stile follow path to left of shed, over stile to cross right hand corner of field to gap in hedge ( ignore track at right hand corner of field). At road left and immediately left onto footpath. Keeping the field boundary on your immediate left cross two fields, at footpath junction bear right down to a road. At road turn right then left at next bridleway sign (Warren Farm). Follow this track uphill to a T junction, turn left. Pass pub on right (King William) (Hailey). At footpath sign turn right and follow track. Keep forward passed barns, track narrows to path , go downhill across field to enter Wicks Wood, ignore tracks to left and right.

At track in farm yard (Woodhouse Farm) turn right and follow the track around the wood. Just before buildings fork left at waymark. Follow track between fields and enter Mongewell Wood. Climb up through the wood to exit near large house on left (Upper Cottages), continue forward to track crossroads, turn left. At next building Upper House Farm, follow way marked route around farm. Go forward through small wood, ignoring footpath to right. The Ridgeway joins from left, continue forward up hill to Nuffield church on right. Turn right at road and continue along it to a T junction. Cross diagonally left to follow footpath passed Elderberry cottage on right. Forward ignore footpath to left, after about ¾ mile, on joining track bear right then left (signed Howberrywood Farm). After a further ¾ mile pass farm, ignore footpath to right and road and footpath to left, follow path through Notts Wood to join track/road at Newnhamhill Farm. At T junction follow waymarks to cross two roads very close together. Take lefthand track to go up through Bush Wood. As you approach a road ahead bear left near tree with a whit spot, proceed onwards to pass left of a garden shed. You will now be entering a sports field - follow right hand hedge to road and enter enclosed footpath.

At main road in Stoke Row turn right then left at signpost for Kingswood Common. In about ¼ mile the road swings left here take the footpath on right. At next waymark turn left, at track turn right. Forward to cross minor road at Neals Farm, just beyond right at way marked footpath to follow edge of  wood on your left. At next waymark enter woods. Fork right at next way marks and follow path to metalled road. Turn right then immediately left in front of  5-bar gate, follow path downhill to road. Turn right and follow road through wooded  slope, at road junction turn left. After about 250 yds turn left onto footpath, then after a further 250 yds turn right to follow footpath along edge of wood. At Larchdown Farm bear left onto road, ignore footpath to left, continue with wood on left. At the end of the wood look for stile on the left at a gap in the hedge, cross field to stile, turn left on track then immediately right at 5-bar gate. Follow path, with eventually a sports field on right to reach 5-bar gate with timber yard on left, continue forward to main road (Checkendon). Your start point is diagonally left by church.

Chieveley 741476, 12½ miles, Explorer 158

Park in East Lane near the doctors surgery . Walk eastwards (away from main road), where road turns sharply left take footpath on the right to cross field. At road (Grace Lane) turn left along busy road  to cross A34 (road has now become Prior Court Road), pass Newbury Showground on right and cross motorway. Ignore paths and tracks left and right and after about 500yds from motorway turn  left into Old Street and immediately right into RUPP, Doctors Lane. In 400yds left over stile into field, over second stile, across field and take stile on right into wood. Bear left at fork and at ‘T’ junction turn left passed house on left. Just beyond house turn right onto footpath which descends into Oare. Go through Oare and where roads bears sharply right turn left onto RUPP, Oareborough Lane to cross motorway. After about 500yds track forks take right fork onto footpath. Pass a barn on the right, bear left on footpath to cross field, into second field, follow the field divide to finger post at top of slope here turn right. Cross field and through thick hedge into field. Head to left of large oak tree on the horizon, go through hedge and keeping hedgerow on left follow it to road.

At the road turn left, ignore road on the right and in 300yds where road goes left go ahead onto RUPP. In 400yds at track junction turn left onto RUPP, Green Hams Lane. Follow this lane ignoring tacks left and right for about one mile here the track forks take the left fork and in a further mile exit wooded track on ridge with cross tracks. Turn left onto Dennisford Road (track), this in ½ mile leads through a tunnel under A34 road. Follow track around and in about 10ydsat the top of the slope next to the road turn right onto byway, Halfpenny Catch Lane. After just under a mile at road turn right. Pass South Stanmore Farm and just beyond Bridle Cottage on left turn left over stile into field.

Cross two fields and at the end of the second field turn right to join track joining from left. Follow field boundary with hedge on left through third field and at end of forth field look for field boundary on left, head due south from this point to meet wide tree lined hedge. Go through on footpath and continue due south to meet track in front of houses. Turn right and follow road around to left to meet road, here turn left and in about 20yds turn right onto byway, Gidley Lane. Ignoring footpaths to left and right in ½ mile at cross paths turn left onto byway, New road. Follow this, ignore footpaths left and right, and in ½ mile just before houses of Downend turn right . Follow fence, later hedge towards Chieveley church. At track to Chieveley Manor turn left then right at road and then left into East Lane.

Christmas Common,  710936, 9 ½ miles, Explorer 171, (Christmas Common, Ridgeway, Swyncombe, Cookley Green, Russell’s Water, Pishill, Hollandridge Lane, Christmas Common)

Walk south out of car park to pickup footpath  - this runs between car park wooded area and open fields.

Follow the path south westwards, this leads to the Nettlebed / Watlington road (B480),  ignone fork at edge of field and the later footpath to the right and the track between two fields. On arriving at the road turn right and at 150yds turn left onto the Ridgeway / Swan Way. (There a Permissive Path on the left in the which parallels the Ridgeway).

At the crossroads (about 400yds ) go straight ahead on Ridgeway ( signed Lys Farm House). Ignore footpath for Britwell Salome and continue ahead crossing  the Britwell road onwards along the Ridgeway. At next junction turn left and stay left through North Farm farmyard. Go forward keeping open field on your right. Follow Ridgeway signs (an acorn) up through Dean Wood / Westerend Shaw ignoring footpath on right. On exiting wood go straight ahead down hill keeping hedgerow on your left.

Go up through kissing gate and  straight across the road towards Swyncombe church , immediately before the church yard turn left towards Swyncombe House. Where the palling fence turns sharply left, turn left into field. Keep the palling fenced enclosure in the field to your left and aim for the gate ahead of you leading into Church Wood. In the wood take the left fork, ignore all tracks and continue ahead, ignore style to road, fork right at bridleway, exit wood onto Swyncombe / Coolkley Green road. Turn right.

At the Green go straight ahead across the green to the bus shelter on the far side of the B480. At the bus shelter turn left and follow road edge of this second green to Cookley House - turn left to follow signposted bridleway. Ignore footpath to left continue ahead to fork in bridleway, turn left and climb steeply to road in Russells Water. Turn left and follow road to village pond , on far side of pond turn right - ignore fork to left - follow track through small wood. At the edge of the wood continue ahead to farm. Go through farmyard and between barns (arrow on oak tree where path narrows).

Ignore crossing footpath, At junction with second  footpath turn left to pass in front of entrance to Old Vicarage House. Follow road down the hill passed Pishill church to main road - turn right and after 50 m in front of Pishill Farm House turn left. Continue ahead through gate and through valley, on entering the wood keep right to climb hill, at wood edge join footpath going right, at  track turn left. (Alternatively: at  Pishill Farm House turn left and after 20 m turn right over stile (PS6). This will lead to the above mentioned track where you should turn left). Continue along this track ignoring all other tracks and paths until you reach the Christmas Common / Northend road go forward on this road to meet Cookley Green / Stokenchurch road. At fork turn left towards Watlington - the car park is 400yds on left.

Henley I 759828 12 miles, Explorer 171, (Henley, Middle Assendon, Bix, Shepherd’s Green, Greys Court, Henley)

Park in Waitrose carpark. Depart via Ravenscroft Road, turn right on Kings Road and left on Bell Street. Continue along the Nettlebed road  forking left, away from the Marlow road, after 300yds and after another 300yds turn right into footpath. Follow footpath up hill keeping hedge on your right. Immediately on entering wood fork left and then keep on main track up through wood. On exiting wood continue on same line upwards through scattered trees to metal gate. Continue forward passed pigs. At field boundary go through gate ignoring footpath  crossroads, and again continue forward, now on sealed road, passed Henley Park. The track continues forward uphill to become enclosed path then track. At minor road cross diagonally left onto footpath. Cross fields diagonally left to ascend slightly then descend sharply into Middle Assendon. At minor road turn left then right to reach the B480. Cross road to footpath which climbs steeply, partly enclosed, to meet minor road (White Lane). Turn left to follow road upwards towards Bix. Where road bears sharply right go forward on footpath across field.

At road bear right and keeping church on right continue on footpath to meet the Henley to Nettlebed road, turn right. After 300yds turn left into path  ignoring the first footpath. In 100yds ignore footpath to left and second path on left a little further. Continue forward for about 1 mile, ignore track to Bromsden farm. At next junction turn left and follow track around to right to pass Merrimoles house on left. Just beyond the house at crossroads turn left. In 300yds at another crossroads again turn left to follow path through woods. Ignore crossroads and footpath to right and after about ¼ mile the wood finishes on left, continue forward just in wood to meet ‘T’ junction with track. Turn right to meet minor road, go forward on road and in about 100yds turn left on footpath into Padnell’s Wood. At cross roads in wood turn left to exit via stile into field. Bear right to cross centre of field, cross stile, keep wood on right, to continue forward to another stile. Keep houses with large gardens on right to reach metal gate, go forward on track to Shepherds Green. Follow track forward keeping houses on left, as track bears left in front of house continue forward to pass house on left. This footpath is initially enclosed then crosses field to enter Sam’s Wood. Continue forward ignoring footpaths to left to eventually arrive at open green opposite Greysgreen Farm. Bear left passed cricket pavilion, turn left onto footpath between houses. Continue forward to enter wood and descend steeply to field, continue forward uphill to road.

Cross road to follow sealed track in front of Grey’s Court, continue onwards to cross stiles, as track begins to climb find stile on left onto enclosed footpath going in the same direction (the footpath has been moved out of the field to avoid very wet path), ignore footpath to left. Cross stile and another on left, follow path with farm on left to farm track where turn right. At road cross diagonally left to enter Lambridge Wood. Keep on main track for about ¾ mile ignoring track to right, at cross roads bear right and in 300yds turn right. At edge of wood cross stile into field. Keep hedge on right to cross two fields to road (about ¾ mile). Turn right then left into sealed road. Follow this track then path initially gently then steeply down hill to meet ‘T’ junction at hedge, turn left. At field boundary cross stile into field with hedge now on left. At tracks junction go diagonally left forward into Ash Plantation, pass Lower Hernes house on left, forward into initially enclosed footpath. Follow this for about 1 mile crossing footpath cross roads, with having passed the crossroads,  Henley College playing fields on left. Where footpath meets road cross onto footpath going uphill. At top turn right on road  (Deanfield Road), turn left onto Deanfield Avenue then right onto Gravel Hill. Almost immediately the road forks take the left fork (West Street) and follow it down hill to cross roads turn left onto Kings Road and in 100yds turn right into Waitrose carpark.

Henley II, 772817, 14 miles, Explorer 171, ( Henley, Shiplake, Dunsden Green, Chalkhouse Green, Crowsley, Harpsden, Henley)

Park in car park at the end of Mill Lane. Exit car park and turn left, go straight ahead over walkway to the end of Marsh Lock, continue ahead with river on your left. Footpath eventually bears right away from river to cross footbridge and into enclosed footpath. Go ahead at crossing track and exit onto road. Where road forks take left. In about ½ mile from exiting footpath, in front of Rivermead house bear right behind hedge and go straight ahead, crossing track, at railway line turn left, ignore path ahead crossing railway line. At road turn left over level crossing. Immediately beyond the Baskerville Arms pub turn left. In 600yds, ignoring New Road on right, turn left towards Lashbrook Farm. Cross bridge and in 15yds turn right through kissing gate, cross field to second kissing gate, through and follow path down right hand edge field. Cross track and at road turn right, where wall ends turn left towards lock. Immediately before lock turn right through kissing gate to again follow river.

Cross field, then over stile, where path opens out go forward on bridleway between Clubhouse and Boathouse (here our path leaves the Thames Path). Where path meets track bear sharply right to continue on bridleway uphill to Shiplake church. Keeping the church on right follow the church lane down to main road, here cross into Plough Lane with the Plowden Arms pub on left. In 300yds from the pub (just beyond Tudor Cottages) turn left onto farm track. Where track bears left go forward through kissing gate to follow fence line up field. At field boundary go over stile and immediately right. Where fence on right finishes turn left towards a small clump of trees, ignore footpath joining from right, just before first wooden pylon after clump bear right to diagonally cross field. Cross track and continue towards Shiplake Copse.

Follow track through wood to stile, cross and keeping wood later hedgerow on left continue to road. Turn left at road and in 150yds turn right into Green Lane. Where lane ends in front of wooden garage turn left onto footpath. At road left then immediately right to cross field to thick hedge here right to follow hedge on your right. At corner of field where path ends at track turn left onto Tagg Lane. In 400yds at crossing footpath turn right over footbridge. Go over lawn to second footbridge, bear left in field to follow hedge to road. At road go right and immediately left into broad track, go under power lines and at next road turn right (Row Lane). At main road go ahead and in 100yds from joining this road go over stile to left, cross field half right towards red roofed house. Over stile onto road, left then right onto metalled track (take left fork). At low stone/brick wall ahead turn left and continue ahead with hedge on your left. Where footpath forks take the right, follow path through to road there right then left into Tower Close.

At main road in Emmer Green go right then left into track (Chalkhousegreen Lane). Continue ahead to riding stables on left here path ahead narrows, go ahead.  This very muddy path eventually becomes a metalled road, where this turns sharply left turn right on footpath into Thimble Cottage. At rear of cottage over stile into enclosed path, over next stile and half right across field to further stile across this field with fence on the right. Go half left across next field towards houses and road. At the road turn left, ignore road to right, take footpath  on right opposite Winters Folly house to cross field half right to road. Cross road to right of Bird in Hand pub, in 50yds bear left onto footpath waymarked Crowsley Park. Over stile and follow fence line down field, over a double stile and the up field to far left corner of Morgan’s wood. Over stile and across field to stile and enclosed path. Bear left on track and turn right at road. At fork go left. Turn left at main road and first right through formal gates into Crowsley Park. Pass in front of Crowsley Park House and go through a metal gate to take an initially enclosed footpath on right. Cross field to left of a clump of chestnut trees to stile.

From stile aim for wooden waymark post in middle of field, at second post bear left to go down field to exit onto road. Here right and immediately right again to follow bridleway waymarked Binfield Heath. Ignore crossing track to North Lodge and continue ahead through wood ignoring paths left and right. At wood edge bear right to follow hedge to track (Bone’s Lane) and ‘T’ junction. Turn left on to Harpsden Road. Where wood starts on right turn right onto bridle path through wood. At road continue ahead and 25yds go over stile into field, follow hedge on your right to next stile and crossing footpath, ignore this and continue ahead. Go over fence and through gate onto road. In 200yds fork left onto footpath, cross road and follow footpath ahead an then down hill into Harpsden. At road bear right to pass church  on right. Ignore road to right and follow Harpsden Way around to the left. At top of hill where Peppard Lane crosses road turn right onto bridleway. Where path meets road go ahead, at main road cross right to go down Mill Lane.

Starting from the village hall car park. Exit car park turn right, take first right into track (Doctors Lane), ignore footpath to right. At road left to main road and there left again. (There appears to be a Permissive Path , unlabled at time of walk, running from the end of Doctors Lane to opposite Crabtree Lane, if this is confirmed it would be an easier route). Turn right into Crabtree Lane, continue along passed military married quarters on  left, the road becomes a byway. Right at bridle path, in 200yds left at waymark onto footpath. At road right onto Kiln Drive, in front of  2 Kiln Drive turn right onto byway.  At top of slope ignore path to left, continue ahead, at junction near motorway turn left and follow track around quarry. Where road leads into quarry cross and turn immediately left. On entering wood turn right onto byway (Marsh Lane). In about ½ mile reach road here right and in 150yds left at Carbrook Cottage. Right at ‘T’ junction and left at next junction. Continue onto road (B4009).

At road cross into Fisher’s Lane, in ¾ mile cross road into Bucklebury Lane. Ignore footpaths to left and right, Where road bends sharply right continue ahead on byway and immediately fork right. On reaching road turn left. Where made up road ends fork right, ignore footpath on right, just beyond Bridle End house fork left onto bridle way, straight across crossing bridle way. At staggered crossroads right onto footpath (track). Cross stile on left in to field, turn right, down field to cross foot bridge, climb slope to rejoin track and exit onto road with house on left. Pass in front of house and then immediately left into byway (Holly Lane). Cross little stream and continue on byway ignoring crossing footpath. Follow track around to left and enter edge of wood, with wood on right. Join track ahead and continue to road, here left and immediately right over stile into field, keep hedgerow on right. Exit field via kissing gate, follow track through small wood , cross River Pang, and exit onto road, turn left.

At road junction turn left to pass Marlston Farm. At ‘T’ junction right. Where road bears sharply left go straight on onto byway (Burntbush Lane). Ignoring tracks to left and right in about ½ mile come to a road, here right then left through farm yard on RUPP. In a further ½ mile in front of Birch Farm follow track around to left. Where track bears sharply right keep straight on with Birch Cottages on right. Through gate into field, go down field to road. At road sharply left into RUPP on tree lined track. At footpath sign turn right, where track forks keep right. Exit wood onto road here left then right into Chapel Lane. Follow Lane around ignoring Pond Lane and Deacons Lane, cross old railway bridge and so to main road, here right. After school on left cross stile into field, follow footpath around field to cross second stile. Straight ahead  with hedgerow on right to third stile and into Oare. At road left, as road bears right take footpath on left and up steep slope to top of ridge. At ‘T’ junction turn left, go straight ahead on footpath ignoring footpath to right. Pass bench and various paths left and right, where main path forks go right downhill. This path curls back through 180°, follow it around across back gardens to meet road in Hermitage. Turn right and follow pavement back to village hall.

Kingsclere & Hannington. 12 miles (525586, Explorer 144)

This walk starts from public car park off Swan Street, Kingsclere.

Leave the car park and turn left up road. Continue ahead to pass through metal barrier and bear left to pass through wooden gate onto playing fields. Pass the playground and bear diagonally left towards wooden barrier across enclosed footpath, just to left of park bench. At T-junction turn right onto track and at later paths’ intersection keep ahead bearing left. Continue uphill to reach road and stay on road until it turns sharply left. Take bridleway on right and where track bends sharply right, bear left and continue downhill to reach road. Cross road and continue uphill to meet crossroads at top of hill. Keep ahead with woods on left, and later pass through left-hand edge of woods ignoring path to right to emerge from woods. Pass through farmyard (Balstone Farm) leaving large brick building on your left. Continue ahead on road and at road junction turn right. Where road turns right left, turn left onto Right of Way and shortly turn right by stile to follow footpath keeping to right-hand edge of field. Cross open field and pass through gap in hedge bearing right along field edge. At waymark bear half left across field down to road.

Turn left and shortly right between farm buildings leaving brick building on your left. Turn left at end of buildings to follow footpath on right, aiming for left-hand end of box tall hedge ahead. Turn right onto gravel track leading onto road. Keep ahead, continue on drive down to road and turn right. Pass road junction to right, continue ahead and where road bends sharply left, take track on right. Take bridleway on right to follow line of trees on grassy path, the “Wayfarer’s Walk”(WW). Continue along edge of woods, cross track still on WW. Follow well-defined track through woods and open farm land. At T-junction follow the path to right and turn left by farm buildings. Continue up stony track to turn right onto path at top of hill, still WW. Cross field to smaller gap in hedge opposite, continue ahead and pass to left-hand side of barn. Cross stile down to road, cross road and bear slightly right past Flint Cottage sign to finger post and style ahead. Cross field to stile opposite, continue ahead to cross double stile on right. Follow path across field and on leaving the grassy path turn right across corner of field under telephone wires aiming for houses opposite on hill. Pass through gap in hedge to follow enclosed footpath to reach road. Turn left into the village of Hannington.

Continue past the village green and at T-junction with triangle in the middle turn left. Pass through metal gate onto bridleway on right. Pass under power cables and turn left before reaching next field. Follow track around to right to pass along right-hand edge of woods. At junction by water tower at top of hill continue ahead across open fields. On reaching crossing track, turn left, ignoring track to right leading uphill. Just before road, take steps up on right, and pass through swing gate onto playing fields. Follow left-hand edge of playing fields to leave through wooden gate in bottom left-hand corner. Bear right down path and continue down road back to car park on right.

Nettlebed, 702868 13 miles, Explorer 171, (Nettlebed, Nuffield, Sywncombe, (Russell’s Water), Bix Bottom, Crocker End, Nettlebed)

Turn in to north of Nettlebed to Henley road and park east of the bus shelter, walk along this road in an ENE direction, at junction turn right and then left down track. After about 500yds arrive at ‘T’ junction turn right, at main road cross onto footpath / track. In 200 yds footpath bears right away from track (follow arrows) it then bears left before arriving at cross roads with a track, turn left. After 200yds track forks take right hand track which shortly bears right. In 200yds pass ‘Merrimoles’ on left, at cross roads turn left, forward 150yds, at  next cross roads turn right and follow track to main road. Cross road to follow Deadmans Lane passing ‘Merrimoles Farm’ on right. Keep on lane for about  ½ mile, ignoring footpath to right, until you reach a mettled road, turn left to follow road uphill. At ‘T’ junction turn right, ignore footpath to left, bear right of Howberrywood Farm buildings and continue following Howberrywood Lane for about ¾ mile. Where track bears right go forward on footpath ignoring all other paths (at this point there is a meeting of 6 footpaths).  The lanes continues straight ahead for a further ¾ mile, passing Elderberry Cottage on left, go forward ignore paths to the left go forward 80 yds to road .

Cross road left and immediately right to follow sign-posted road towards Nuffield church. Just before the church which is on the left hand side of the road turn right onto Ridgeway footpath. This will lead you across a field to  a golf course. Follow the unique way marks across golf course to pass between house and outhouse and on the main road. Go left then right continuing to follow Ridgeway down through wood. At edge of wood go forward across field to cross bridleway, then forward to small wood after crossing large field (note views to left). At junction ahead follow path / track to right  to pass Ewelme Park on left, go straight ahead to cross roads and bear right at end of barns continuing to follow Ridgeway. Follow track along right hand edge of field to corner of Straights Plantation, ignore footpath into wood on right continue forward to enter Jacob’s Tent (wood), follow track down hill through wood and field to meet ‘T’ junction, turn right. At Swyncombe church on right enter church yard, follow path around left hand end of church, exit through gate ahead, turn immediately left. The path goes through shrubbery ignore path to left, follow path around to right then immediately left to cross private road to Swynecombe House. Keeping palling fence on left forward 20 yds to enter field. Bear right, keep enclosure with palling fence in left walk uphill to gate into wood.

Shortly after entering wood take right fork, this bears around o the right, ignore footpath on left. Where footpath meets mettled road turn left on to it. Follow road to exit estate. Ignore track to left, pass Parkcorner Farm on right , meet main road ahead. Go right then left onto minor road, go forward ignore footpath on left. Where road turns sharply right go forward and 100yds ignore footpath to right but go through  gate to follow enclosed footpath ahead into Priors’ Wood. The path climbs upto Redpits Manor , follow waymarks around buildings (BRIDLEWAY) and descend along track to meet crossing track, turn right. (Russell’s Water at top of hill ahead). Follow this track (later becoming a mettled road) for about two miles as it bends back and forward along the base of the valley. You will pass after about 1½ miles the Warburg Nature Reserve office. On arriving at the ruins of St James’s Church (on right), turn right just beyond the ruins and follow the footpath uphill. This goes through Wellgrove Wood  then across a field to a gate into Crocker End hamlet. Follow path around to right and take first road to left between houses. At road junction go ahead down then uphill to hamlet of Catslip. At end of houses on right turn right next to Catslip sign, you are now on the path that you followed at the start. Follow this track for 500yds then right then left across road to follow road back to Nettlebed.

Puttenham, The Sands & Gatwick. 12 miles (920462, Explorer 145)

This walk starts at Puttenham Common Top Car Park.

Leave the car park, return to and cross the road to follow wooden fence on left. Turn left at corner of fence to follow path into valley, turn left and in 20 metres turn right up slope to continue through woods. Leave woods through swing gate and follow path down to road.  

Turn left along road for about 100 metres to cross stile by metal gate on left to follow path through field bearing left and then uphill to stile with waymark. Cross field aiming for left-hand tree of a line of oaks ahead, with stile just to right. Cross stile and field with fence on left. Cross double stile in corner of field, continue ahead on enclosed path. Cross stile with Priory in view ahead, bear left on to well-defined green path and continue down to road. Go ahead along road to T-junction and turn left in front of Good Intent pub. Continue along road ignoring all footpath signs, and where road bends sharply right continue ahead on Lascombe Lane, signposted North Downs Way. Shortly, at fork, bear right. Continue ahead at top of hill on gravel track, and at fork on edge of open field bear right to reach road.

Turn left and immediately right on to sunken path. Pass through 2 swing gates and continue along left-hand edge of fields. Pass through swing gate on left signposted North Downs Way. At crossing tracks turn right and just before horse jumps ahead, turn right again down to road. Turn right and immediately left through swing gate to follow path at top of field. At end of second field turn right and immediately left following path with fence on left. At road, turn left down road, leaving North Downs Way.  

Where road bends sharply right by golf course continue ahead on gravel footpath, along left hand edge of playing fields, through woods to road. Cross road into Long Hill ignoring all paths off, to enter Forestry Commission land, Crooksbury Common. Continue ahead and leave Common on stony track through houses. Just before road at bottom of hill turn sharp left uphill on bridleway to reach driveway. At staggered crossroads bear left to reach road with figures of eagles on gateposts. Cross road and continue along bridleway down to road. Cross road, follow bridleway and enter field on left through small wooden gate. Cross field to enter woods through another wooden gate and continue ahead down to road.

Turn right to pass through hamlet of Gatwick, ignoring first bridleway on left to take second bridleway and continue past Kingshott Cottage to pass through woods. Where track turns sharp right, cross stile to cross field diagonally bearing right down to road. Turn left along road and shortly just beyond 30-mph signs take footpath on left. Cross stile and continue along right hand edge of field, through swing gate and leave field over stile ahead. At T-junction by large wall turn right and follow drive down to road. Turn left along road and shortly take footpath on left to retrace your steps and return to the car park.

Snelsmore Common Country Park, 464710,  Explorer 158, 12 miles, (Snelsmore, Chieveley, North Heath, Shepherds Hill, Bagnor & Snelsmore)

Coming from the road, just in front of the metal height barrier, turn right on Permissive Bridleway. Ignoring paths left and right continue to road - there turn left. In ¼ mile just before building on left turn right on footpath. At ‘T’ junction turn right, ignoring crossing paths continue to road, turn left. After about ½ mile turn right onto byway. Fork left at Lynnwood House sign and continue to road, here turn left and in 200yds at crossroads left again. Continue along this road then track passed Kites Abbey. At junction with bridleway turn left, this parallels the motorway, in ½ mile turn sharply right to cross motorway via bridge. Follow this bridleway, ignoring paths from the right, into Chieveley. At ‘T’ junction turn right, at next ‘T’ junction left. Pass Post Office on left and Church Lane also on left at next left, Manor Lane, turn left. In 50yds immediately after Wishanger House turn right on footpath, ignore footpath on left.

At the road in village of Downend turn left on byway (New Road). In ½ mile go straight ahead at crossroads, in a further ¼ mile ahead again at second crossroads. Follow track around left then right to pass through farm yard and immerge at road, in 15yds turn left on footpath. At bottom of large field go left then right up hill with small wood on left. At North Heath Farm keep to right of barns. Go through metal gates bear right onto metalled track and then ahead on footpath between fields. At end of enclosed footpath turn right towards road, cross onto byway. At ‘T’ junction turn right and follow track around to left. At end of wood (Pope’s Wood)  turn left onto byway (Green Lane). In ½mile ignore byway to left and go forward on bridleway to cross motorway. Follow bridleway around to the left of farm (Wyfield Manor Farm) continue to follow path across fields to road with house on left (Mud Hall Cottage). Turn right to go up hill towards Shepherd’s Hill. Take first footpath on left over stile into wood. In 30yds left on Public Right of Way. Bear right at fork. Path joins track entering from right. Cross stile into field and bear left to cross further stile in fence. Aim for stile at far end of field, here cross into wood. Ignore byway from right (more than ½ mile) and later footpath from left.

At road bear left, at ‘T’ junction turn right and follow road around to cross river (Lambourn) into Bagnor. Ignore footpath on left, fork left in front of Blackbird pub. At end of houses turn left onto RUPP, ignore footpath on right (Lambourn Valley Way). Follow RUPP ignoring footpath from left at crossroads.  Eventually pass houses on right and enter wood via gate. Fork left, ignore bridleway to right. At ‘T’ junction turn right on track, follow this ignoring all paths left and right. At Snelsmore carpark on left go into carpark via metal gate and follow through bearing right to exit / car.

Whitchurch-on Thames, Woodcote & Whitchurch Hill. 12 miles (636768, Explorer 171)

Park just south of the Whitchurch toll bridge over the River Thames. Leave car park and turn right over river. Ignore “Thames Path” sign on left and continue ahead along road past road junction signposted Goring Heath and Woodcote. Continue uphill to turn left onto “Thames Path”. Leave asphalt lane, go ahead down steps along stony path to later climb steps and continue along river. At edge of woods turn right uphill to metal gate to enter nature reserve. At top of hill bear left downhill towards metal and wooden gates. Turn left down track and at T-junction turn right up road marked as a bridleway. At top of hill turn left over stile and keep ahead for 30 metres to waymark, cross stile and diagonally over small field to further stile and continue along fenced path. Cross another stile turning left and then right onto broad track. Where track turns sharp right continue ahead over stile to cross field diagonally towards woods.

Cross stile into woods, ignoring all crossing tracks but at T-junction bear right downhill and left onto bridleway. At crossroads turn left uphill following field edge on right to reach metal gate at road. Turn right along road and left onto footpath marked “Elvendon ¼”. At barn bear left onto asphalt drive and continue downhill with views of Elvendon Priory. At gates bear left to follow footpath sign down enclosed path to reach stile at road. Cross road, climb bank and hill to reach stile at top of hill. Cross stile and continue ahead across field to metal gate and cross adjacent stile. Continue along stony track past farm buildings to reach road. Turn right and then left at footpath sign onto the “Chiltern Way Extension” (CWE). At edge of woods turn left to follow white arrows on trees. Ignore all tracks off, to continue along grassy path through woods with field edge on right. Leave woods over stile bearing left across field to reach further stile and road. Turn right and shortly left onto CWE again. Follow right hand edge of field towards woods, and edge of woods to continue along fence to turn right at bottom corner to pass in front of Dean Farm. At end of beech hedge bear right into woods, at T junction bear left and at further T junction bear left again to leave woods and turn right onto footpath towards houses. At road turn left and shortly right onto footpath. At road continue ahead ignoring roads to right and left. At crossroads continue ahead and at next T-junction turn right onto public footpath to reach woods. At crossing track continue ahead for 10 metres bearing right onto indistinct path, which after 20 metres bears left to reach enclosed path with wooden fence on left. Continue ahead to cross stile into field and follow left hand edge of field to reach stile in corner. Cross second field to stile opposite and reach road.

After leaving field turn left along road and where road bends sharply left continue ahead on gravel track. Where track bends right take footpath on left into woods and follow white arrows on trees. At path junction continue ahead to cross stile. At next crossroads turn right down to road. Cross road to take bridleway ahead and at mounds of spoil take indistinct path to left-hand side. Continue through woods and leave woods onto enclosed path down to road. Continue ahead on “Bridle Road”. At T junction turn left, and just before road bends right, take footpath on right. At first junction turn left, and at further junction turn right down to road. Turn right along road and right onto footpath over stile. Pass through swing gate and follow path down to road. Turn right along road taking elevated path running parallel. At end of path cross road taking path on left and at next road turn right and right again at junction. At next road junction turn left, back over bridge to car park.
